Craftsman homes are a product of the Arts & Crafts Movement that began in Western Europe in the late 1800s. This burgeoning design philosophy eschewed the formality and ornateness of the preceding Victorian Era. Connecting with nature and returning to a simple life were just a few core aims of the movement, resulting in a design emphasis for homes that embraced craftsmanship and function.
The term "craftsman" originated in California, and homes in this style popped up in several cities on the West Coast, including Portland. The creation of the Craftsman bungalow, (a.k.a. “California” bungalow) was a simple, garden-oriented house. The period between the 1890s to the 1920s was particularly strong for Craftsman home construction.
