Hayden Island Neighborhood Info

Hayden Island, sometimes referred to as Jantzen Beach, is an island neighborhood on the Columbia River. It is the portion of North Portland that sits between Kenton. St. Johns and Vancouver, Washington. The only access to the island, by car, is Exit 308 off of the I-5 Freeway.

The area is home to the famous and longtime favorite shopping destination, Jantzen Beach Center. Many Washington residents venture across the river to shop the big box retailers here for tax-free shopping (Washington has a sales tax, and Oregon does not).

Most visitors to Hayden Island only see the shopping area, but a significant portion of the island's western end is undeveloped. Disputes arise over what should be done with the undeveloped parts, whether to be added to the urban growth boundary or preserved as a protected natural habitat. In 2010, Portland City Council voted to go forward with an analysis of annexation that would allow 300 acres for an undetermined port facility for the Port of Portland and preserve the remaining 500 acres as a protected natural area. The annexation agreement addressed issues including recreation, mitigation, land management, habitat preservation, security, repair and improvement of local roads and a community enhancement fund. The analysis prepared by ECONorthwest found that the benefits of the development of the 300 acres with the remaining 500 acres as a natural area were likely to outweigh the benefits of no development.

The eastern part of Hayden Island is Tomahawk Island and home to the Columbia River Yacht Club and Tomahawk Bay Marina. This end of the neighborhood has excellent vantage points from which to capture images of Mt. Hood and close-ups of yachts floating in the water.

Hayden Island offers a unique lifestyle. There are many condo complexes, mobile home communities, houseboats, and modest detached houses. While there are relatively few single-family detached houses on the island, folks choose to live here for other reasons, not the least of which is the easy access to the river but the killer territorial views. It's pretty convenient to live here, too, as there is plenty of nearby shopping and excellent restaurants on the waterfront. There is, however, heavy traffic on I-5 during morning and evening commuting hours.
