Hillside Neighborhood Info

Tucked into the western slope of West Hills, Hillside neighborhood overlooks Downtown Portland and beyond.

Locals sometimes refer to Hillside, and the Kings Heights enclave nestled within it as the "Beverly Hills" of Portland because of its concentration of luxury homes that sit on a hill that accessed via narrow and windy roads. Home shoppers unfamiliar with the area, who plan to drive around to check out the homes for sale, would be well advised to come equipped with GPS and good brake pads.

Residents of the Hillside live just minutes from the ever-popular shopping and dining areas of Northwest District and Downtown Portland, both of which are accessed via the area's main arterial surface street, West Burnside Street. When there is gridlock on Highway 2, travelers from Beaverton or Hillsboro often bypass the highway, opting to use Burnside Street instead, creating congestion during commuting hours.

Hillside is home to the beautiful and historic Pittock Mansion and Pittock Acres Park, once home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock, owners of Weekly Oregonian in 1860. Just next door sits Macleay Park, part of the Forest Park system that connects to Washington Park.

Living in Hillside is an excellent way to live and experience Portland due to its style, territorial views, proximity to the city, and being surrounded by nature. It's similar to living in Forest Park, except the commute time to the city is shorter.

Kings Heights

Kings Heights is sub-neighborhood, an enclave that occupies the northeastern portion of Hillside District. Its name comes from Amos Nahum King, who purchased squatter's rights to roughly 513 acres of land in 1849. That land would eventually become Hillside, Northwest District, Nob Hill, Arlington Heights, and Goose Hollow. The small enclave perched on the highest point of the area soon became known as Kings Heights.

Architectural styles of homes in King Heights include English Tudor, Victorian, Colonial, and Mid-century Modern.
