Kerns Neighborhood Info
Kerns is a neighborhood sits between Northeast and Southeast Portland, sharing its borders with Lloyd District and Sullivan’s Gulch on the north, Laurelhurst on the east, Buckman and Sunnyside on the south and the Willamette River on the west.
Kerns abuts the Willamette River and is a prime location for anyone looking to commute to Downtown Portland as it sits just across the river. The district is as close as you can get to downtown without living there. The Steel and Burnside Bridges take Kerns residents directly into the heart of the city.
Like other districts along the river, Kerns is also an urban neighborhood with a mix of commercial and residential buildings. Some residential buildings in Kerns are multi-family units and multiplexes. Pockets of single-family homes here come in architectural flavors like Craftsman and Bungalow. Commercial buildings line the major thoroughfares.
Living here means never being bored. Kerns is home to some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. In addition to locally-owned mom 'n pop establishments, Kern residents also enjoy anchor stores like Whole Foods Market.
Laurelhurst Theater that has this flashy lit Art Deco design in the front.
The landmark, Art Deco theatre, Laurelhurst Theater, graces the Kerns neighborhood. It is not located, as the name suggests, in the Laurelhurst neighborhood next-door. In addition to cathing second-run films, the theatre serves food, beer, and really delicious popcorn.
Kerns has two parks: Oregon Park and Buckman Field Park, adjoining Benson Polytechnic High School, a technical public high school, and part of the Portland Public Schools system. These green spaces provide playtimes and gathering opportunities for their urban neighbors in Kerns.
