Pearl District Neighborhood
Portland's Pearl District is a vibrant, lively, entertaining, and highly-desired urban neighborhood in which to live. It is the centerpiece of the downtown area with some of the best restaurants, breweries, cafes, art galleries, and upscale retail businesses. Luxury high-rise condominium buildings dot the area, and prices are much higher than the Portland real estate market average.
However, the Pearl District benefits are many, not the least of which includes very low car dependence. One can go out to fantastic restaurants and bars without leaving the neighborhood.
The vibe here is different than anywhere else in Portland. Before the mid-1980s, the area industrial and occupied by warehouses, light industry, and railroad yards. The only thing resembling nonindustrial space was the iconic Powell's Books. It is a large, independently-owned new and used bookstore and a longtime favorite of Portlanders.
Pearl District picked up steam as a place to live when artists moved into the neighborhood, transforming it into a multi-family residential area. Over the last couple of decades, the construction of the Portland Streetcar system improved the livability of the former industrial zone. As the residential population grew, so did businesses to serve them.
Today, Pearl District consists mostly of high-rise condos and warehouse converted lofts. Many units have gorgeous views of Downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt. Hood, and more.
