St. Johns sits at the northwestern tip of the peninsula at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. St. Johns borders University Park, Portsmouth, Kenton, and Cathedral Park, which is more southwest of St. Johns. Across the Willamette River sits Linnton neighborhood, which is a long strip that abuts Forest Park. Across the Columbia River sits Hayden Island, and a quick jaunt over the I-5 bridge puts travelers in Vancouver, Washington.

St. Johns feels very removed from the rest of Portland due to its remote location. The upside is all the green space and a sense of independence evidenced by its downtown area full of locally owned shops and small businesses. The district feels like a small town, very laid-back and friendly. St. Johns has long been a neighborhood for North Portland’s blue-collar workers.

Johns neighborhood has plenty of natural areas, including Kelly Point Park, Pier Park, and Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area around Smith Lake, which is a vast lake that takes up about one-third of St. Johns. Residents also enjoy kayaking and canoeing through Columbia Slough.

This neighborhood attracts real estate shoppers due to the relatively affordable home prices.
